The Navigation of Narrative

35” x 23” x 1.75”

We don’t simply journey through the world – we journey through the stories that shape our understanding of it. Romance, fiction, history and drama are no escape from the safe shore of reality. But the instruments of orientation and imagination help us locate the meaning within the vast and shifting map of human experience. The rider charges ahead on a horse whose hooves are made of ink pen nibs ready to write the story of what comes next. He also holds a key to unlock the mysteries of the unknown as the captain steers ahead with a full heart.

This piece is made with old books and illustrations, old ink pens as masks on the ship. The boat is covered with an old book cover. The captain is a vintage bisque doll wearing a paper hat made from a page from Shakespeare and wears a rhinestone heart on their chest. The ship wheel  is made from an old compass and watch casing. The horse and rider is an antique lead toy.
